Following an increase in crimes being committed in Nassau, Bahamas, Royal Caribbean is warning passengers of dangers that could be found in the cruise port.
Jan 12, 2018 U.S. Government personnel are not permitted to visit the Sand Trap area in Nassau due to crime. Jet-ski operators are known to commit sexual assaults against tourists, including minors. As a result, U.S. Government personnel are not permitted to use jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands.

In a letter distributed to guests onboard Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas, the company directly addresses the issue. The note, signed by Captain Srecko Ban, says that non-violent crimes, like theft of personal items, were 'the most common types of crimes.'
Captain Srecko Ban adds that visitors to Nassau, just like visitors to all major cities in the world, needed 'to be mindful of their personal safety.”
The cruise line goes on to offer the following advice:

- Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
- Leave valuables in your stateroom safe.
- Keep your belongings (phones, expensive cameras) secure and in sight.
- Carry only the credit cards and cash that you will need on the outing and use discretion when handling cash publicly.

The letter advises that passengers “not venture too far from tourist areas and consider participating in an organized tour.” A list follows with the areas that have proven crime-ridden in recent months, such as the Sand Trap, Fish Fry and Nassau areas referred to by locals as “Over the Hill’ by locals and “should be avoided after sunset.”
